Who It’s For

Dental Crowns and Bridges in Long Beach

Dental crowns and bridges repair teeth that are too damaged for a filling and replace teeth that are missing, so you can chew, speak and smile without thinking about it.

Left alone, a cracked tooth can split further, and a gap lets the teeth beside it drift and tilt over time. A crown or bridge stops that and gives you back a full, even bite.

A crown or bridge may be right for you if

  • A tooth is cracked, broken or badly worn
  • A cavity or old filling is too large to patch again
  • A tooth is misshapen or discolored next to its neighbors
  • One or more teeth are missing
  • You have a dental implant that needs a crown

Not sure which you need? Dr. Adli will examine the tooth, take X-rays and explain your options before anything is decided.

How They Work

How Crowns and Bridges Work

A crown covers a damaged tooth. A bridge spans a gap, held by crowns on the teeth either side.

Crown
A tooth-shaped cap that covers the whole visible part of a damaged tooth. It restores the tooth’s shape and strength, so you can bite on it normally again.
Bridge
A replacement tooth, called a pontic, held in the gap by crowns on the teeth either side. It is fixed in place, so you don’t take it out to clean it.
Natural teeth
A bridge rests on the natural teeth beside the gap, which are shaped to hold its crowns, or on dental implants instead.

Your Options

Choosing the Right Crown or Bridge

Dr. Adli recommends a material and design based on where the tooth is, how you bite and how you want it to look.

  • Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain closely matches the color and translucency of natural enamel, so it suits front teeth that show when you smile.

  • Zirconia Crowns

Zirconia is a very strong ceramic. It suits back teeth that take the most force when you chew, and it is shaded to blend in.

  • Tooth-Supported Bridges

The teeth either side of the gap are shaped to hold crowns, which carry the replacement tooth between them.

  • Implant-Supported Bridges

Implants stand in for the missing roots, so the neighboring teeth are left untouched. Often used when several teeth in a row are missing.

Missing a single tooth? A dental implant with a crown is the other main option. We’ll compare it with a bridge at your consultation.

Step by Step

Getting a Crown or Bridge

Most crowns and bridges take two or more visits. Here is what happens at each stage.

  1. Exam and Planning

Dr. Adli examines the tooth, takes X-rays and explains whether a crown, a bridge or an implant suits it best, and what it is likely to cost.

  2. Preparing the Tooth

The area is numbed first. Dr. Adli removes any decay or damaged tissue and shapes the tooth so the crown can fit over it. Impressions of your teeth go to our dental lab, where your restoration is made.

  3. Your Temporary

You leave with a temporary crown or bridge that protects the tooth and your gums while the permanent one is made.

  4. Fitting the Permanent Crown or Bridge

We remove the temporary, check the fit, bite and color of the new crown or bridge, then bond it in place with dental cement. Any small adjustments are made there and then.

  5. Looking After It

Brush and floss as usual, and clean under a bridge with a floss threader. Regular check-ups and cleanings keep the crown and the tooth beneath it healthy.

Questions

FAQs

The tooth is numbed before it is prepared, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. The tooth and gum can feel a little tender afterwards. If a crown ever feels high when you bite, call us and we’ll adjust it.
