Laser Care for Your Gums

Laser Dentistry in Long Beach

A dental laser is a focused beam of light. We use ours for your gums: to reduce bacteria at every cleaning, and to treat gum disease more gently than a scalpel can.

If you’re due for a cleaning, LBR is already part of it. If your gums bleed, feel tender or have pulled back, an exam will show whether you need more.

  • At every cleaning Laser Bacterial Reduction Lowers the bacteria in your gum pockets while your teeth are cleaned.
  • For gum disease Laser-Assisted Periodontal Therapy Added to a deep cleaning to clear infected tissue from the pockets.
  • For advanced gum disease LANAP® Laser Gum Treatment Treats deep pockets without cutting the gums away. About LANAP®

Why the Laser Matters

Not All Lasers Are Created Equal

Dental lasers aren’t interchangeable. Each produces light at a particular wavelength, and the wavelength decides which tissue the light affects and how.

Some lasers are made for cutting, others for whitening. For gum disease you want one that acts on diseased tissue and bacteria while sparing the healthy gum around them, used by someone trained to do it.

  1. The wavelengthOur laser’s wavelength targets diseased gum tissue and bacteria in the pockets, not healthy tissue.
  2. The protocolLANAP® is FDA-cleared and performed with the PerioLase® MVP-7, the laser we use.
  3. The trainingDr. Adli is certified in the LANAP® protocol and keeps up her training.

With Every Cleaning

Laser Bacterial Reduction (LBR)

Your hygienist performs LBR at your cleaning with a non-cutting dental laser.

The laser light is focused around each tooth and into the gum pockets. A cleaning can make the gums bleed a little, which gives bacteria a way into the body. LBR kills most of those bacteria, easing the strain on your immune system and making the cleaning safer.

It’s non-invasive and painless. Dr. Adli wants every patient to have the best maintenance care she can offer, which is why we perform LBR with every cleaning, including at your regular check-ups.

With Deep Cleanings

Laser-Assisted Periodontal Therapy (LAPT)

LAPT adds the laser to scaling and root planing, the deep cleaning below the gumline used to treat gum disease.

The laser’s wavelength targets diseased tissue and bacteria in the gum pockets and leaves healthy tissue alone. Nothing is cut away from the gums or bone, so there is usually less discomfort afterward and a quicker recovery.

Your hygienist performs it during the deep cleaning. Read more about gum disease and its treatment.

Your Visits

What to Expect, Visit by Visit

  1. An Exam First

We measure your gum pockets and check your X-rays, so we know which laser care you need, if any beyond LBR.

  2. LBR at Your Cleaning

The laser is passed around each tooth and into the pockets. It’s non-invasive and painless.

  3. LAPT With a Deep Cleaning

If you have gum disease, the area is numbed and the laser is used along with scaling and root planing.

  4. LANAP® for Deep Pockets

When pockets are deep, Dr. Adli may recommend LANAP® in place of traditional gum surgery.

  5. Keeping It That Way

Regular cleanings, each with LBR, help keep bacteria down and your gums stable.

The LANAP® Protocol

LANAP® | Laser Treatment

For moderate to severe gum disease, the LANAP® protocol is an FDA-cleared alternative to traditional gum surgery.

The laser clears infected tissue from deep pockets without a scalpel or stitches, and leaves healthy gum in place. LANAP® is FDA-cleared for periodontal regeneration: it’s designed to help your body rebuild lost gum attachment and bone around the tooth. Results vary from person to person.

Questions

Laser Dentistry FAQs

LBR is non-invasive and painless. For laser-assisted deep cleanings and LANAP®, we numb the area first, and because healthy tissue isn’t cut away, there is usually less discomfort afterward.
